Pennies for Patients - Campaign Launches Monday Feb 6th

Over the next three weeks, our children will have the opportunity to experience the powerful feeling that comes from helping others. Pennies for Patients is a program in which students collect spare change to help people with blood cancer. The funds raised will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Be on the look out for information in your Thursday folder. Our children will receive informational flyers and small cardboard change boxes to collect money. We are trying to raise $800 school wide to help finance research for a cure for blood cancers and make a difference in the life of others. Thanks for your support!

Community Service - Holiday Giving Program- A Wider Circle, North Pole and Family Sponsorship

Thousands of low-income families and individuals in Montgomery County do not have the resources to celebrate the holidays this year. A Wider Circle is an organization that works with some of the neediest families and individuals in our area. This organization helps families break the cycle of poverty by helping them get their basic needs met. During the holidays, A Wider Circle is their bright light. Most likely, the holiday gifts people receive through this organization, are the only ones they will be receiving. How can Seven Locks families help?

- Sponsor a family- If you would like to sponsor a family, a wish list will be provided to you for the family you're sponsoring and you will provide 2-3 gifts for each child and 1-2 gifts for each adult in the family. Also consider sponsoring a family with one or two other Seven Locks families. You can deliver the gifts directly to the family you're sponsoring or we can help you with delivery. For more information contact Greta Hando- ghando@verizon.net. We've had a few families volunteer already, but we would love to have more!

-North Pole- Donate new, unwrapped gifts and gift cards and drop them in the school lobby in the box marked "North Pole". A Wider Circle will gratefully accept these gifts and place them in their "North Pole" where their client families can visit and select presents for their family members. (Suggested gifts include $10 gift cards, trucks, games, dolls, toys, blankets and sheet sets, kitchen items, movie tickets, hats, gloves, scarves and towels.) We've had quite a few toys donated already, and we'd love to see them keep coming in! Collection ends Tuesday, December 20th.

Wrap presents- A Wider Circle needs volunteers to help wrap presents at their office in Silver Spring between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm every day of the week except Wednesdays and Sundays. Please contact Anne Thompson-annethompson@awidercircle.org to schedule hours to volunteer.

Please Donate Halloween Costumes and Winter Coats

Let's help our neighbors!!

We are collecting gently used Halloween costumes and winter coats to give to children in our community who might not have them.

Please bring them to the Pumpkin Patch this Sunday where there will be a box for collection. You can also bring them to school next week and put them in the big box near the office, labeled "costumes/coats". Thanks for your help!

Thanksgiving Baskets for Our Neighbors - Community Service

Please join us in helping our neighbors celebrate Thanksgiving by donating food and assembling Thanksgiving baskets for A Wider Circle, a Silver Spring-based charity that for over 10 years has be working to help children and adults lift themselves out of poverty through a variety of thoughtfully-created programs and services,www.awidercircle.org.

Together, we aim to donate 20 nourishing and festive Thanksgiving baskets with turkey and all of the trimmings. We will collect nonperishable food and grocery store gift cards (to purchase turkeys), assemble Thanksgiving baskets at school and deliver them to A Wider Circle. Deadline to receive food donations is Friday, November 18th. Please use the SignUp Genius link below to let us know what you will donate. You can sign up for several food items or even create an entire Thanksgiving meal!

Walkathon for the Homeless - October 5th @ Recess

Every year, our students raise awareness and money to help our homeless neighbors in Montgomery County by participating in a Walkathon for the Homeless to benefit Interfaith Works (www.iworksmc.org) during recess. At an assembly organized by the PTA last Friday, our students learned that 1,500 people spend the night without a home in Montgomery County. What can we do together as a community to help these neighbors and also motivate and engage our children in helping others and cultivate their natural compassion?

Support our Walkathon for the Homeless! All children will walk for the homeless at recess on October 5th. You can support the vital services that Interfaith Works provides to our neighbors by signing the form your student will bring home in their Thursday Folder and by making a contribution. Watch for more details in your Thursday Folder. If you have any questions or would like to help out at the Walkathon, please contact Jeanne Segal or Greta Hando. Thank you for your support!
