Variety Show!!

The Seven Locks Variety Show is looking for talent! All students are encouraged to participate and show off their unique abilities at our 5th Annual Seven Locks Variety Show scheduled for FRIDAY, MARCH 9 at 7PM, with a dress rehearsal the night before.

We are calling all comedians, musicians, magicians, poets, pianists, twirlers, actors, martial artists, dancers, singers... come and share with us any special talent that you may have. Start practicing and get ready for this great event. Previous acts have included:

dance routines

singing a funny song with friends

playing an instrument (piano, guitar, group band)

telling jokes, comedy act

magic tricks

lling a story

reciting a poem performing acrobats: pyramid, cartwheels, etc.

performing karate or tae kwon do (including breaking wooden boards) skit or mime

puppet show

ventriloquist

impersonation of a famous person or cartoon character hog call or other animal (really, this was a hit!) something you are just plain good at (maybe hula-hoop, whistling or Rubix cube) There will be 2 Preview days for the acts that will take place on Thursday, February 16 and Friday February 17, right after school (this is a change from the current PTA calendar). Please check with your little Beethoven, Jerry Seinfeld, Houdini, Bruce Lee or Taylor Swift, and encourage them to participate. Acts can be solo or with a group of friends.

CHESS CLUB

You can now sign up for the Spring session of Chess Club. The instructor, Victor Sherman,is a Chess Master with over 30 years experience teaching chess. The class is open to students of all levels-beginners learn how to play chess, while experienced players work on improving strategy.

A portion of each class is devoted to instruction and a portion to play (students are matched with those of similar ability). Sign up now! Attached is the registration form. If you have any question, contact Kelly Casten at kellycasten@aol.com.

LACROSSE

"Want to play high school lacrosse? Join the players and coaches for two days of fun workouts at Churchill on Saturdays, February 18 and February 25 from 2:30 to 4:00 cost $25/$45.

Find out what it is like to play for your high school team. Play with the team at these two sessions and then come and cheer them on as the season starts in March. Engineering FUNdamentals with LEGO

Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and over 100,000 pieces of LEGO! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and the Battletrack! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment.

An experienced instructor will challenge students to engineer at the next level. This class is being offered to students in Grades 2-5. The classes will be held on Thursdays from January 12, 2012 - March 15, 2012, 3:15 - 4:45. The cost for this 10-week session is $170.

DRAMA CLASS REGISTRATION- Page to Stage

Discover what it means to turn a script into a play. Students will be able to take short scenes and learn character development, team building skills, stage blocking, and positive social and communication skills. The class will conclude with a small performance for parents and family members.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASS

Hip hop classes are being offered to both boys and girls at Seven Locks starting in January, for 8 weeks for $120. There will be 2 classes:

Mondays, 3:15-4:15 for grades 3, 4 and 5

Wednesdays, 3:15-4:15 for grades K, 1 and 2

FLES - Foreign Language in Elementary Schools

Registration for Foreign Language Classes (Spanish, Chinese, French) Winter Session (Starting in January) Now Open! Fall enrollment not required for winter enrollment and no previous foreign language experience required. Register now as class size is limited and will be held after school at our new school beginning in January. Enrollment in Fall classes does not automatically register you for Winter classes.

Learning a foreign language is a lifelong adventure. Young children have a natural ability for foreign language acquisition. They seem to learn effortlessly and often amaze teachers with their aptitude! While studying a foreign language, children are growing developmentally and cognitively, gaining important critical thinking skills. Even more valuable to children today is that FLES classes increase your child's awareness and understanding in our increasingly multicultural world!

We are pleased to offer/continue to offer the following classes at Seven Locks:

Beginner French (Grades 1-5) - Mondays 3:30pm

Beginner Spanish (Grades 2-5) - Thursdays 3:30pm

Let's Bring Girls on the Run to Seven Locks!

Help us bring this incredible program for girls grades 3-5 to Seven Locks. Girls on the Run, which will begin in Mid-March, is a program that promotes healthy living and body image while implementing a running program that builds to a county-wide 5K at the end of the 9-week program. Don't worry ... neither coaches nor participants need to be marathoners ... the program encourages girls to go at their own pace!

Practices are twice per week with one most likely to occur in the morning before school. Each practice, which lasts approximately one hour, consists of an introduction, warm up, work out and cool down. The activities will be guided by at least one "coach". Here's where we need you!

We'd like to know which girls are interested and which mothers or fathers are interested in helping. GOTR provides training for coaches. KOA After School Sports is back in Fall 2011!

Starting on Tuesday, September 20 (for seven weeks), your child can play flag football, wiffle ball, lacrosse, capture the flag, street hockey, kickball and soccer. The class will run through December 1 and will take place immediately after school on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 at Seven Locks/Radnor. Classes will be for K-2 and 3-5, boys and girls. ***Club Friday is returning for its 20th year of Friday night fun at Potomac Community Center for children from grades 3 to 6 on Oct. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. The last night of Club Friday is March 23, 2012.
